Cautions on Promptings
1st They are not infallible
2nd They are not immediate
3rd They are not information downloads
So how can you know if God is prompting you?
1. When I am in God’s presence and out of the blue a thought comes to me and continues.
2. When I have a prompting or thought that clearly falls into line with God’s Word. ie: to encourage someone, reach out to someone, buy a meal for someone.
3. When I receive a specific direction from the Lord about something I wasn’t even thinking about.
4. When I am reading Scripture and a verse jumps off the page and I can’t get it off of my mind even if I’ve read the verse many times before.
5. When a thought or feeling pops into my mind and it sticks - I can’t shake it. ie: Talk to that person, pray for that person, do something specific.
6. When the prompting keeps coming to my heart and mind - and what I am being prompted to do makes me uncomfortable!
7. When a prompting is confirmed by my spouse or through random conversations from people in my close circle.
8. When the prompting is brought to my mind 3 times.
9. When the prompting comes with a sense of urgency or some other strong emotion like sadness or a burden.
10. When the prompting comes while I am praying and I feel the need to write it down.
11. When it’s the first thing I think of when I wake up.
12. When it comes up in different unrelated conversations.
13. When you have repeated interaction with the person you have been prompted about.
14. When an overwhelming peace follows obedience to the prompting.
