Jesus' Death & Our Life
Hebrews 9:27-10:22
1. Jesus’ death removes sin
Hebrews 10:1b-4, (NLT)
the sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Romans 3:23 (NIV)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Ezekiel 18:20, (NIV)
The soul who sins is the one who will die.
1 John 1:7,
The blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 2:2a, (ESV)
He is the propitiation for our sins
2. Jesus’ death sanctifies the believer
Hebrews 10:10, (NLT)
For God's will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.
Hebrews 10:14, (NIV)
because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
Romans 6:22, (NLT)
But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
1 John 3:7-10, (NLT)
Dear children, don't let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born into God's family do not make a practice of sinning, because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they are children of God. So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.
3. Jesus’ death destroyed his enemies
Hebrews 10:12-13, (NLT)
our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet.
Colossians 2:15, (NLT)
In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
Hebrews 2:14, (NLT)
For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
Revelation 1:18, (NIV)
I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
4. Jesus’ death changes our hearts
Hebrews 10:15-18, (NIV)
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.
Hebrews 10:19, (NIV)
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
Hebrews 10:22 (NIV)
let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
1st We have an appointment with death
Hebrews 9:27a, (NKJV)
It is appointed for men to die
Psalm 139:15-16, (NLT)
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed
2nd We only live once on planet earth
3rd After death comes judgment
Hebrews 9:27, (NKJV)
It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
Hebrews 10:26-27, (NLT)
Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible expectation of God's judgment (crisis) and the raging fire (fiery indignation) that will consume his enemies.
Hebrews 10:31 (NLT)
It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 9:28, (NLT)
so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.
